I can hardly believe it, but this week we cross the threshold into the realm of double digit numbered episodes. To celebrate I invited a very special guest to join me on the show. I am excited to introduce you all to my partner in crime, the lovely Calli Roberts.

I specifically wanted to bring Calli on to give you some insight into my personal life and to get her perspective on some of the challenges and opportunities we are presented with as millennials. She has a great perspective as she has recently launched her own blog, became a rep for a network marketing organization, coaches a youth girls' volleyball team and has a full time marketing job on top of it all.

You can find Calli on her blog at kickitwithcal.com or on Instagram at instagram.com/kickitwithcal/.

As 20-something-year-old young professionals, many of us Millennials are constantly finding ourselves in a transitional phase of our lives. Graduation from undergrad or grad school. Transitioning to a new job. Starting a family. Moving to a new city. Shopping at Whole Foods for the first time. Whatever your transition may be, you aren't alone if you feel a bit uprooted and maybe even a little lost.

This week's guest, Ashley Basile Oeken, knows that feeling well.  That's exactly what she went through when she first moved to Cleveland after grad school.  She then did what any sensible young professional would do.  She got a job, stuck it out and found her place in the crazy new city she called home.  That is until she decided she didn't want any more young professionals in Cleveland feeling lost when they arrived in the city, and took matters into her own hands.

Ashley became the first staff member and is now the President of the young professional organization Engage! Cleveland. In this episode, we discuss an assortment of topics regarding millennials making transitions in their lives.  We dig into networking, the importance of making "adult" friends, a changing workplace culture and the ominous career clout around "job-hopping".

Have you ever been introduced to someone via email?  I know, I know... it happens all the time.  But how about a 400 word essay on why said person is the most highly recommended guest you could possibly have on your podcast?  Well, that's exactly how I was introduced to this week's guest, Jason Sabo.  After meeting Jason, I can understand where that enthusiasm came from.  I now share the same enthusiast in introducing him to you.

Just a few years older than myself, Jason has assembled an impressive collection of professional achievements and built a remarkable career in the healthcare field.  He has held a number of notable positions in his field, and is now a Senior Consultant with DHG Healthcare, the healthcare industry practice of Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP.

So how did he do it?  How did he reach such a remarkable level of success in so short a period of time?  That's exactly what Jason is here to teach us.

In this episode you will hear how being actively engaged in every opportunity along his journey has catapulted his career to extraordinary heights.  Jason sheds light on an array of Millennial-relevant topics including:
  • Networking tips for young professionals
  • The power of saying "No"
  • Servant Leadership philosophy
  • Being a Super Connector
  • Communicating with your manager
  • Managing your mentor relationships
  • The importance of public speaking and writing skills, no matter what your job

There are some people you hang out with who you can't help but want to be their friend.  Jason Orsky is definitely one of these people.  And it doesn't take long to figure out why.  The guy would literally give you the shirt off his back if you needed it (I've seen him do it).  And as a business owner, he's seen first hand that living as a servant not only makes you feel great, it is a profitable approach to business.

Jason shares some great stories in this episode that may even elicit a tear or two.  Have your tissues on deck.  Some of the key topics we cover include:
  • Living with a servant attitude
  • Keeping your problems in perspective
  • Business success derived from a philanthropic lifestyle
  • Defining what success means to you
  • Giving what you have: time or money
  • Find the need involved with your passion
  • Treating clients as friends

My favorite quotes from this episode:
"If you do good by people, people are going to do business with you."
     "The money follows the service."
"Some will.  Some won't.  Who cares?  Who's next?"

Today I have the pleasure of being joined by an inspiring young leader who understands better than most the challenges millennials face when taking on a leadership role for the first time in their professional careers.

Emily Monteleone is a Program Manager at Cleveland Clinic’s Taussig Cancer Institute, where she oversees the Cancer Programming efforts in creating the multidisciplinary cancer programs for breast, colorectal and upper gastrointestinal cancers, such as pancreatic and liver cancer. Emily is a member of the Executive Board for GOAL, Cleveland Clinic’s Group of Aspiring Leaders and is also a graduate of the inaugural class of the Emerging Leaders Program at the Cleveland Clinic.  Emily spends her free time working with Cleveland area non-profits, such as Gigi’s Playhouse and Engage! Cleveland.  For perspective, the Cleveland Clinic has been ranked one of the top 5 hospitals in the country.

In our conversation, we dive into Emily's specific advice on how young professionals can not only succeed, but thrive in leadership positions.  Topics we cover include:
  • Jumping at opportunities, no matter how big or small
  • The "Buddy to Boss" transition
  • Opening the communication door as a leader
  • Qualities of successful leaders
  • Importance of stretch assignments
  • Servant Leadership
  • Always staying true to yourself
